In Australia lavorano circa 100 mila meccanici specializzati e nonostante il numero piuttosto alto di officine, la figura di meccanico per auto è una delle più ricercate in Australia, tanto che che compare anche nella Combined List of Eligible Skilled Occupation come professione sponsorizzabile medium long-term. Il che vuol dire che chi ha un buon livello d’inglese, tanti anni di esperienza dimostrabili e un diploma in perito meccanico può aspirare ad uno skilled visa. Altrimenti un diploma in Automotive Technology conseguito in Australia è un buon punto di partenza per trovare un datore di lavoro e magari uno sponsor come meccanico auto.
Una volta terminato questo percorso di studi è possibile richiedere un Postgraduate visa (subclass 485) che permette di restare in Australia per altri 18 mesi con un permesso di lavoro full time per lavorare nel settore e maturare esperienza dopo gli studi. Per diventare meccanico in Australia e per usufruire del Postgraduate Visa una volta terminati gli studi è necessario frequentare tutti e tre i corsi: Certificate III, Certificate IV e Diploma.
